How secure is MD5?

This week a cambridge university security team blog was hacked, when they checked it out they saw a new user in a MySQL database with a new MD5'd password.

MD5 doesn't encrypt - instead encoding.. in theory it would take thousands and thousands of computers a fair amount of time to hack that password.. BUT it seems that with the "power of the internet" people are doing just that and sticking the resulting output on webpages to be trawled by Google.

Basically passwords for many web sites might not be safe, 'cos if a hacker could gain read acess to a database they might see a MD5 encoded password and by just sticking it in Google they can see what it is.. at the moment only normal names / words can be googled e.g. Bob as MD5 is 9f9d51bc70ef21ca5c14f307980a29d8 - Google that and you can see the MD5 is "bob".

At the moment my usual passwords are not googled.. but it's all a bit worrying.

Love this attack on Mircosoft hotmail vs. gmail .. but reading it I realised I've really begun to hate Microsoft less.. I think instead of hating IE (5,6 or 7) like I did three or four years ago, Now I've become more ambivalent about it.. I guess the buggers have worn me down..
